- On the wide banks of the once full-flowing Bityug River, there are two villages: Novopokrovka and Melguny. The history of these villages is closely intertwined and goes back to the distant 18th century. Around 1755, Catherine's grandee, Senator General P. Melgunov became the owner of these lands and brought his peasants here from other provinces of Russia. The formed villages were named after its owner - Melguny. In 1758, a church was built here, consecrated in honor of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. For the first time, the village of Pokrovskoye was mentioned in the "Census of church officials of the Usman district" in 1782, where it is indicated that there is a church there and all religious rituals are performed here by the deacon Job Platonov. In the book of the revision tale of 1811 for the Tambov province it appears that in the village. Pokrovskoe collegiate councilor Avdotya Alekseevna Lyubtsova owns 243 souls, later she sells her estate to Prince Dmitry Petrovich Volkonsky. The village of Melguny became the center of his fiefdom, which included the villages: Shulgino, Akhmatovo, Nikolskoye, Dmitrievka and Peschanovka. The new owner changed the name of his central estate. The village became known as Novopokrovskoe - in honor of the Intercession Church. At the end of the 19th century, Prince Volkonsky, according to old-timers, lost the Pokrovskoye estate at cards to Count Anatoly Vladimirovich Orlov-Davydov, the son of the owner of the future sugar factory Alexei Anatolyevich Orlov-Davydov, who inherited it. Until 1923, divine services were held in the temple. After the closure of the temple, the building was given over to the club. in 1990, as a result of a strong fire, it was significantly destroyed. In 2008, by the decision of the gathering of the villagers, work began on the restoration of the temple. In 2017, the rector of the church was appointed and the parish was re-created.
