- The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is located in Khujand, the capital of Sughd Region, in northern Tajikistan. The Orthodox presence in Khujand began in the late 19th century, when Russian settlers and military personnel established a small worship space near the Syr Darya River. A permanent brick church was constructed by 1877, serving the growing Russian Orthodox community. During the Soviet era, the church was closed in the 1920s and the building was eventually demolished in the 1960s, reflecting the regime’s policy of suppressing religious institutions. Following Tajikistan’s independence, the church was reconstructed and reopened in 2010 with the support of the Russian Orthodox Church, and consecrated in 2017 by Metropolitan Vikentiy of Tashkent and Bishop Pitirim of Dushanbe. Today, the church remains active, serving a small Orthodox congregation, mainly ethnic Russians, and continues to host liturgies, feast day celebrations, and religious events such as the reception of relics and the Holy Fire from Jerusalem, maintaining the continuity of Orthodox tradition in northern Tajikistan.
