- The Church of the Intercession of the Theotokos is located in the city of Tursunzade (formerly Regar), in Khatlon Region, Tajikistan. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century, when a small Orthodox community of Russian settlers established a place of worship near the Syr Darya River. During the Soviet era, the original church was closed in the 1920s, demolished, and replaced by secular facilities, reflecting the widespread suppression of religious life. After the collapse of the USSR, the Orthodox community revived, and the church was reopened in 1990 to serve the local Orthodox population, mainly ethnic Russians and Slavs. Today, it operates under the Dushanbe Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, offering regular liturgies, sacraments, and charitable services such as a free canteen for the needy. Despite being a small congregation in a predominantly Muslim region, the church has maintained a visible presence, supported by local authorities and the Russian Orthodox hierarchy, and continues to serve both religious and social functions in Tursunzade.
