- History:
- The Orthodox Church in Tajikistan traces its origins to the Russian Empire, when ethnic Russians and other Slavic settlers brought Eastern Orthodoxy to Central Asia. The most prominent parish, St. Nicholas Cathedral in Dushanbe, was constructed in 1943 during World War II, when the Soviet government temporarily eased restrictions on the Russian Orthodox Church. Over the decades, the cathedral became not only a place of worship but also a center for spiritual education and social outreach, including a cemetery with graves dating back to the Soviet era. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Orthodox community faced significant decline, as many ethnic Russians emigrated and the country endured the civil war of 1992–1997. By the early 2000s, the Orthodox population had dwindled to a few hundred active parishioners. In response, the church underwent restoration efforts, particularly between 2005 and 2011, to repair and preserve the cathedral. Today, the Orthodox Church in Tajikistan remains part of the Dushanbe Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, within the Central Asian Metropolitan District, and operates parishes in several cities, including Khujand, Bokhtar, Tursunzoda, and near the Russian military base outside Dushanbe. Despite its small size, the church continues to serve as a religious and social institution, providing worship services, sacraments, and charitable support to both Orthodox Christians and the broader community, maintaining peaceful relations with the predominantly Muslim country.
