- History:
- The Church of the Life‑Giving Trinity in Pyongyang is the only Eastern Orthodox church in North Korea, under the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate). Its construction began in June 2003, with support from both the Russian Orthodox Church and the North Korean authorities, symbolizing a gesture of religious cooperation and Russian–North Korean friendship. The church was consecrated on 13 August 2006 by Metropolitan Kirill (then of Smolensk and Kaliningrad). The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity (Life‑Giving Trinity), and its patronal feast is celebrated on Pentecost / Trinity Sunday, in accordance with Orthodox tradition. It serves a small congregation composed mostly of Russian residents, diplomats, and a few local North Koreans, with clergy including Feodor Kim and John Ra. Though small in number, the parish provides canonical Divine Liturgies on Saturdays, Sundays, and major feast days, representing the presence of Eastern Orthodoxy in an otherwise restricted religious environment. The church falls under the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Korea, part of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Patriarchal Exarchate in Southeast Asia.
