- History:
- Built in 1694 by Ban Cornea Brăiloiu, a high-ranking official (Ban of Craiova) during Austrian administration in Oltenia. He constructed it on inherited land in Vădeni, which was purchased from local boyars in the mid-17th century. The church follows Byzantine traditions, featuring a rectangular plan with a semicircular apse and an open porch. It was designed with thick walls, a narrow entrance (to deter forced entry), and a secret chamber ("tainiță") beneath the bell tower for refuge during Ottoman attacks. In 1732–1733, the interior was frescoed by painters from the Hurezi School (Ranite Grigore, Vasile, and Ioan), commissioned by the founder's son, Monk Dositei. The paintings depict biblical scenes across three registers, serving both liturgical and educational purposes. The church endured Ottoman raids and a German bombardment during World War I (1914–1918). Repairs were funded by Maria Pleniceanu in the early 20th century, addressing roof, window, and iconostasis damage. Major restoration occurred in 2004–2006, led by painter Romeo Andronic, who consolidated the structure and cleaned the frescoes.
