- History:
- The Church of St. Nicholas, also known as the Church of All Souls, is located in Valletta, Malta. It was originally built in 1569 as a Greek Orthodox parish church for the local Greek community. In 1639, the parish priest, Papas Giovanni Metaxi, decided to join the Greek Catholic Church and transferred the church to the Confraternity of the Souls in Purgatory. The church was then rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1652, based on designs by architect Francesco Buonamici. During World War II, the church suffered significant damage from aerial bombardment but was repaired by 1951, including a complete reconstruction of its façade. In 2021, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople established the Holy Patriarchal Exarchate of Malta to better serve the Orthodox faithful on the island. Subsequently, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Malta granted the Church of St. Nicholas to this Exarchate. This transition was highlighted during a significant event on December 5, 2022, when Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided over the Great Vespers service for the feast of Saint Nicholas at the church. Currently, the Church of St. Nicholas serves as the primary place of worship for the Orthodox Christian community under the jurisdiction of the Holy Patriarchal Exarchate of Malta. Regular services are held, including Saturday Vespers at 18:00, Sunday Orthros at 09:00, followed by the Divine Liturgy at 10:00. English Divine Liturgy is held at 9:00 am on Saturdays.
