Historical Details

Build - Founding Year:
1870
History:
In accordance with an edict from the Ottoman Sultan Sultan Abdulaziz, construction on the Greek Orthodox Church of Iskenderun St. Nicholas began in the early 1870s. It was dedicated as a place of worship in 1876. It was constructed with three aisles running east-west in a basilica-style layout. At the corners of the temple entryway, there are bell towers. The "Last Supper" is pictured on the wall directly above the building's arch. The "Eye" is positioned in the barrel vault above the same piece in a triangle configuration. Various-sized images of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ are used to embellish the rest of the dome.
On February 6, 2023, the historic church of Saint Nicholas in Iskenderun was damaged by the severe 7.7 Richter earthquake that struck the Kahramanmaras region. The facade of the building has collapsed for the most part and serious damages have occurred in the interior of the temple. The forecourt has become difficult to access due to the accumulated debris.
