- Greek immigrants settled the Mid-Hudson River region with Poughkeepsie, NY as its largest city in the late 19th century and build the first Orthodox Church, Kimisis tis Theotokou in 1924 on Academy Street. In 1967, the cornerstone to the relocated church on South Grand Avenue was laid.
