- Founded on the Indiction of 1985 as a mission in the Diocese of New York and New Jersey, St. Mary Magdalen became a full parish in January of 1995. From Lampman Chapel at the Union Theological Seminary to the halls of Columbia University, in apartments and condos, St. Mary Magdalen has gone forth to baptize all nations on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the years since. It originated as the offspring of the English-speaking community of St. Innocent's at the 2nd Ave/2nd St Cathedral of the Holy Protection. It has served countless students of Columbia, grounded in the steadfast native New York residents who endure the transience of a Manhattan and university-related parish. The name of the Holy Myrrhbearer and Equal-of-the-Apostles Mary Magdalen was suggested by Fr. Thomas Hopko. A new chapter of its history began with the installation of Fr. Matthew Brown as rector in the 2020s.
