Historical Details

History:
In 1556 Ivan the Terrible allowed Greek monks to stay in the Monastery of St. Nicholas when they came to Moscow. In 1653 the tsar Alexei Mikhailovich gave the monastery “for coming Greek authorities and old monks and Geeks for divine servicing in Greek” (to monks of the Athon Monastery). In 1918 the Monastery was closed. At present only the bell tower of the former monastery of St. Nicholas is extant.
