History:
Tubabao Island (part of Guiuan, Eastern Samar) has a significant Orthodox legacy stemming from the White Russian refugee camp established there from 1949 to around 1951 under the International Refugee Organization. Philippine Social Science Council The refugees were mostly Russian émigrés fleeing China after the Communist takeover, and many lived on the island under very difficult conditions. ROCOR Studies At the time, Archbishop John (later St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco) visited and ministered to them, and a chapel was established on the island. In recent years, pilgrims from the Russian Orthodox Philippines-Vietnam Diocese have visited the former camp site, and there are plans / efforts linked to a “future church in honor of St. John” there.
