- During the early 2000s the growing Orthodox Christian expatriate population in Dubai (Greeks, Lebanese, Bulgarians, Romanians, Cypriots, etc.) needed a canonical parish of their own in the Jebel Ali / Ibn Battuta area. Local Orthodox communities organised fundraising and plans for a traditional Byzantine-style parish building to serve that multi-national flock. The project was made possible in large part because land in the Jebel Ali church complex was provided by members of Dubai’s ruling family — a gesture repeatedly noted in contemporary press and local coverage of churches in Jebel Ali.
